In my league, we draft based on final standings: the LAST place finisher gets the first pick the next season, and so on.

You know, for me, it just never seems to matter whether I’m picking out of a hat or using some randomizer, I always end up with the second to last spot. This year it was 11; last year, when we had fourteen teams, it was 13. And I’m pretty sure three years ago? Yeah, I was hovering around 10 or 11 again.

Here’s how we do it at the end of the season to set the draft order for next year. You buy a cheap goldfih for each player and keep them in a tank at the commissioner’s house. Whichever fish dies first means that player gets the last pick. Then we move up in order until the last fish standing gives its owner the #1 overall pick. If any fish survive, we rank them by size. I believe in this system: the bigger the fish, the better the pick. So yes, size is that important to me. What’s being first or last? It says everything about the coming season.

I let playoff teams pick their spot. Mostly, if you make the playoffs, you want to return. After that, I let people pick spots when they pay. That way, people know when they’ll pick a day or two before the draft. Yes, it gives an unfair advantage to those who did well especially the champion. That’s the point. So, in our league we do a “draft for draft positions” kinda thing, you know? Like, the person who wins the consolation bracket gets to pick where they draft first, and then it just goes in reverse standings order playoff bracket results kinda decide those teams’ draft positions. It honestly keeps things pretty competitive, even for the teams not in the playoffs, and gives us a reason to get most of the guys together for a BBQ in the summer to do the actual draft. I think it works out, but always open to other takes.

Best way is to have people pull numbers 1 through however many you have… then redraw numbers and whichever numbers you pull correlate with the person’s number from that spot. So on the redraw, you pull 6 first whoever pulled 6 the first time has first pick.

I just do it online through ANY mock draft randomizer. I’ve drawn out of a hat, and we’ve picked cards before. I don’t think anyone is down for the fastest 40…'cuz I will say I took 10th on purpose, when really I’m running on a flat.

Here’s how to run an old drafting system: First, conduct a 10 12 man battle royal on a wrestling game. Last person standing picks the draft spot they want. Then, let participants 2 through 10 confidently select the spots they want in the agreed order. It really excited us that this rewarded individual performance directly.

I always do a blind draw pull names out of a hat with witnesses for the top 12 golfers, except for that one specific player who gets excluded. Where they place is exactly where we pick, easy enough. Honestly, I’ve seen this work for NASCAR too. Usually, I just handle the slower 12 qualifiers that way no big deal.

As for an in person draft, you’t want people pulling numbers out of a hat all that suspense! If you’ve got to go another route though, just let whoever scoops up their dues pay hook, line, and sinker it before anyone else that’ll get your guys itching to turn in theirs fast!
